Why once every decade? Decades mark the passing of time in a memorable way. We mark time and culture by decades. Remember the 60’s? the 80’s? Also, the passing of ten years allows men to create a generational legacy by returning again and again to this event with their sons, fathers, and grandfathers and other special men in their lives. Two examples of decadal events provide an understanding of the impact of an event which occurs every ten years. (1) The Passion Play of Oberammergau, Germany: “A play of life and death, promised in a moment of mortal threat - so began the history of the Oberammergau passion play in 1633. In the middle of the Thirty Years War, after months of suffering and death from the plague, the Oberammergauers swore an oath that they would perform the "Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ" every ten years. At Pentecost 1634, they fulfilled their pledge for the first time on a stage they put up in the cemetery above the fresh graves of the plague victims. In the year 2000, the Community of Oberammergau performed the passion play they have preserved throughout the centuries with singular continuity for the 40th time.” (Quote from the official Oberammergau web site) (2) The U.S. Census: Since 1790, the United States Government has carried out a counting of its people and measured social and economic factors of its national life. Originally designed to provide a basis for a "one man - one vote" rule for political representation, the census quickly became a way to gather much additional information about the country which could be used to inform policy for the government. These data also helped business make informed decisions on development and growth. Stand in the Gap is an opportunity to give men the chance to “be counted” in a way that is unique and compelling. When asked by their children and grandchildren, “Were You There?” they will be able to say “Yes” (Joshua 4). Additionally, the momentum gained from the men who attend will help determine the scope and shape of ministry to men in years in the years 2008-2017. Note: The taking of a census (show up and be counted) also played a pivotal role in the birth narrative of Jesus Christ by fulfilling prophecy.
